I have been doing a lot of research online and in army regulations trying to find this answer and have run into far too many people suggesting that you must wear socks and shoes saying that it was required when no regulation I can find backs this up. I can tell you that AR 670-1 does not require the use of socks or shoes. It technically doesn’t even allow for their use unless approved by the commander. It also states that “there are no restrictions on the combination of IPFU items worn”, saying that because the commander authorizes you to wear running shoes requires it is like saying all soldiers must wear gloves in the summer just because it is authorized. FM 21-20 is replaced by TC 3-22.20 so any quotes from FM 21-20 are irrelevant. TC 3-22.20 just says that AR 670-1 covers the wear of the IPFU. I think there are a lot of NCOs out there that don’t know what they are talking about. Prove me wrong.
I am aware that the commander my require you to wear shoes and socks. What I keep being told is that you are required to do so by default I would like to know what regulation if any states this. My point is that the commander though inaction by default allows soldiers to not ware shoes and socks. Without authorization from you commander you are not even allowed to wear shoes or socks. This is not meant to be an exercise in ridiculousness. Evidence shows that running barefoot is much healthier with reduced injury rates. I can no longer run in shoes without suffering from stress fractures and ITB syndrome and have had sports med doctors tell me that I should be running barefoot. I just want to point out that soldiers have the option so long as the command does not take it away. What is more important the health of the soldier or your personal irrational distaste of seeing a barefoot?
