    as far as im aware, cardio is simply getting the heart rate up. running is the most popular form, but anything that raises heart rate is cardio. its purpose is to improve the rate of oxygen uptake in lungs, and the heart also becomes stronger, since its a muscle, more blood cells are made which means more oxygen intake. more oxygen= less lactic acid which is the burning sensation in the muscles.
    sorry if i repeated anything you may have know (especially after 3 monthes!)
